All About Cornerstone

Who Are We?

We are a congregation who believes it is possible to be Bible-centered and still relate to people in today’s world. We have designed our ministries to address the needs of those living in and around Mason County.

Since there is a broad spectrum of ages living in our area, we have asked, “Is it possible to cut across the age demographic and minister to children, youth, young adults, busters, boomers, builders, and senior adults in the same church?”

We have answered that question with a resounding, “Yes!” Here is how we do it.

Blended Worship Music

We have a vibrant music program marked by the blending of great hymns of the church and contemporary songs of worship and praise. Music at Cornerstone finds its expression through the Cornerstone Choir, the Celebration Singers, our youth praise team “Lifted Voice”, instrumental ensembles, organ and piano, and inspiring congregational singing. We encourage every age to use their musical talents for the Lord.

Nurturing Children and Youth

We major in ministries to children and young people. Our AWANA program, Junior Church, Sunday School, and D.V.B.S. give children and youth a firm foundation for living through the application of Biblical Truth. Our full-time Youth Minister, Pastor Jim Schultz, runs an engaging program for Junior and Senior Highers that emphasizes Christian values in daily living.

Strengthening Families

Many of today’s families need help to navigate the turbulent waters of our culture. We are purpose driven to help families succeed by teaching Godly principles for living and helping young and old alike to cultivate a relationship with Jesus Christ. Our family fellowship groups, our Bible studies, our social activities, and our youth programs are all focused toward this end.

Connecting

We seek to connect people with people and individuals with God. Cornerstone is a great place to make friends, regardless of age. In addition to our youth programs, there are many social activities for various age ranges from college age through senior adults that provide fun and fellowship. Our pastoral staff, led by Pastor Jim Carlson, regularly make visits and connects with those who need prayer or encouragement.

Mission-Minded

Cornerstone has always had a missionary heart. Over our 129 year history several from our congregation have pursued full-time missionary careers. Additionally, many in our church have participated in short-term missionary ventures to the Far East, Africa, Mexico and South America. Each summer our high school youth go on a week-long missions trip in the U.S. to conduct Bible School programs and help with restoration and reconstruction in such locations as Miami and Chattanooga. We include our missionaries in our general budget, and we have never failed in our missionary support.

Our Statement of Faith

We are a “Baptist” church affiliated with the Baptist General Conference of America. This is a conference of 1000 like-minded churches throughout the United States that cooperate together to support a world-wide missionary outreach.

Here is a summary of our Affirmation of Faith:

The Word of God—We believe that the Bible is the Word of God, fully inspired and without error in the original manuscripts, written under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, and that it has supreme authority in all matters of faith and conduct.

God—We believe that there is one God, eternally existing in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Jesus Christ—We believe in the deity of Christ, in His virgin birth, sinless life, miracles and teachings. We believe in His atoning death, bodily resurrection, ascension into Heaven, perpetual intercession for His people, and personal, visible return to earth.

Salvation—We believe that all people are sinners by nature and by choice and are, therefore, under condemnation. We believe that those who repent of their sins and trust in Jesus Christ as Savior are forgiven and regenerated (born again) by the Holy Spirit. Such forgiveness and regeneration makes one a member of God’s forever family and gives one assurance of eternity in Heaven.

Communion and Baptism—We observe Communion once each month, recalling the sacrifice of Jesus. Partaking of the broken bread and grape juice, we remember the broken body and shed blood of our Savior. We view baptism by immersion as a public testimony, wherein a Christian identifies with the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus.

“See, I lay a stone in Zion, a chosen and precious Cornerstone, and the one who trusts in Him will never be put to shame.”      I Peter 2:6
